Our Wacky Weekend Capers -
Return to Home Page
In June 1981 the name
“Healthy Slimmers Fellowship” was chosen for our newly formed group.
Within two weeks it was decided to hold our first Margate weekend on 7th,
8th, 9th August, 1981. 54 delegates attended this
weekend from the then five clubs involved, Mitchelton Evening, Clayfield,
Stafford, Redlands and Coorparoo.
It
was a very successful move and it was not long before Bribie Island Day,
Mitchelton Day, Graceville Day, Sherwood, Inala, Stradbroke, Booval and
Dunwich club joined us. At our second weekend convention in March 1982,
Redlands club suggested the weekends be held twice each year. Everyone
was enjoying these fun filled weekends and we soon had a booked out
situation. Bayside, Bribie Island Evening, Kallangur, Laidley, Logan and
Loganholme clubs joined our ranks at later dates.
Our sports afternoons
were enjoyed by all and became a very competitive event with the
three-legged race, sack races and the “Tug-of-War”! One sunny afternoon
Bribie Island Day arrived on the sports field in their sports uniform to
the delight of everyone. From then the race for supremacy was on with
names such as:
v
Bayside - Bayside Butterflies
v
Bribie Island Day - Bribie Birds
v
Bribie Island Evening – Bribie Night Owls
v
Clayfield - Judy’s Jokers
v
Coorparoo – Coorparoo Doves
v
Dunwich – Dunwich Dumplings
v
Kallangur – Cuddly Koalas
v
Laidley – Laidley Lillies
v
Logan
– Logan Ladybugs
v
Loganholme – Loganholme Lorikeets
v
Mitchelton Day – Mitchy Day Happy Hoofers
v
Mitchelton Evening – Mitchy Mongrels
v
Redlands – Redlands Strawberry Tarts
v
Sherwood
v
Samford - Samford Smarties
v
Stafford - Stafford Stars
Shortly after mascots
arrived. The ideas were never ending. Blondie from Stafford in her
ballerina outfit, Faith from Redlands in her Strawberry costume and Jeanie
from Mitchy Eve dressed as a little Mongrel along with the other mascots
that each club proudly displayed. What came next? Yes, the club songs,
cheer squads and the march past. By this time the competition became
really strong and at our fun filled sports afternoon everyone wanted to
take home the coveted sports trophies. Shortly afterwards a new section
was introduced into the sports, the geriatric section. Unfortunately, our
competitive spirits have moved into a new age, or should I say old age,
with trivia competitions now the excitement of the Saturday afternoon.
Each September we hold
our weekend seminar. It is always a weekend of learning as well as fun,
with guest speakers, parlour games, yoga, tai chi, aerobics, relaxation,
walking, fun dancing, fancy dress and most importantly camaraderie and
friendship. The last few years have seen the emphasis change to
encouraging, slow weight loss, whilst adapting a healthy lifestyle. Our
main role is to provide an efficient service to the community.
